Welcome

This Friday marks four years since the Barry Road Bridge was closed, beginning an almost four year journey of frustration and detours for many of us.  Thankfully nobody got killed in Wildwood, a miracle in itself.  The result of the project speaks to how bureaucracy works...or doesn't.  If you have some time look in the archives at the very beginning,, scroll down the page to 2008.

Is the finished road better.  You be the judge.  In some ways yes, in some ways no.  I don't have a speed gun but I am willing to bet the average speed on Barry Road has picked up significantly...I am concerned about the intersections at Amity and at Potomac as well.  It is what is.  Be safe out there.

How Many More Years?

For a review of where we were a year ago, go to the oldest post. Moving forward, I think the word "years" sums it up. The likelihood of the project being completed by August of 2010 is slim, if you have watched the piece of Barry Road in front of the High School I think you would say none. The section from Eastside to Potomac will be much more challenging to construct...if you don't believe it you haven't been down to the BRB lately.

Mayor Funkhouser Town Meeting

WHEN: July 29, 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Wexford Place, 6500 N Cosby Ave.
WHO: Wexford Place

Weatherby Lake Board of Aldermen

Attended the meeting tonight. Mayor Bos gave his update on the Barry Road project, "Not a lot to report", "Utilities drag on and on", "Drawings (on the Hillside piece) have been turned down" and "Hard to say anything positive".

Not sure if the KCMO aldermen have been around lately to view the project. Would be interesting to hear what they think of the progress or lack of it.

BRB Updates

Response to Jennifer and others:

I will be going to the Weatherby Lake Board of Aldermen monthly meeting, tomorrow night (Tuesday). Barry Road is on the agenda. I will post if there is news...or no news. The timeline, as far as I know, has not changed. The contractor had basically two years from this spring to complete the project. There have been no updates from Platte County since the one below.

The utility relocation part of the project is in full swing, especially between Beech and Potomac. As you are aware, it is impossible to traverse Barry between and Beech/Hillside.

Platte County-Barry Road Update

PROGRESS UPDATE

BARRY ROAD, WEST
Potomac to Chariton
01-20-09

Scope of Work:

Platte County is working with the City of Kansas City Missouri to design and construct Barry Road from Potomac to Chariton based on an ultimate three lane road with bike lanes but only build a 28 foot wide portion of the roadway with two 14 foot lanes. This improvement will still provide 2 travel lanes, curbs, storm sewers, sidewalks, streetlights and vertical safety improvements. These improvements should work with the existing budget.
In the future when traffic demands increase and funds are identified for construction the remaining portion of the three lane roadway may be completed by the city of Kansas City.

Design:

SKW (Shafer, Kline, and Warren) has requested, prior to issuance of final drawings that PCPW verify all Right of Way and Easements are acceptable to the property owners. If any changes are necessary, they will make amendments and then issue the final drawings. PCPW has agreed to this request.

Property Acquisition:
PAR Electrical (Acting R/W Agent for PCPW) has contacted all of the property owners with regards to R/W and easement acquisition. Three property owners have signed the Temporary Easement and/or Right-of-Way Deeds that affect their property. Approximately six other property owners have requested that answers to questions be put in writing and then they will be ready to sign-off. PCPW is currently addressing questions with the balance of the owners prior to their sign-off.

Utility Relocation:
All utilities along the road that will conflict with the improvement will need to be relocated. Platte County is coordinating with the utilities to address any conflicts. The utility relocation schedule is contingent upon the individual utility companies schedule and coordination of relocation activities in the Barry Road improvement phases occurring to the east of this project. All relocations not done prior to the start of this project will begin Summer 2009 in coordination with construction.

Platte County will continue holding coordination meetings with all the utility companies, Kansas City and the design engineer (SKW).

KCP&L met with PCPW in January 2009 and has finalized drawings for their power pole relocation work.

MGE and AT&T have completed their relocation design work.

AT&T has started work in the north Right-of-Way.

PCPW, KCMO, and SKW will be meeting again in January or early February 2009 to continue the project coordination process.

Bidding:
Platte County’s goal is to bid the project in early 2009, pending successful design, property acquisition and utility relocations.

Construction:
Construction will occur after property acquisition, utility relocation and bidding is complete. Currently anticipate starting Phase I Construction Summer 2009.

Speed Trap on Amity

On my way to the PHHS wresting match the other night...KCMOPD was conducting traffic control patrol, sitting back off Amity on the Brittany Woodscastle entrance. Ooops! A northbound car probably going too fast was quickly chased down. Traffic was heavy (6:15 PM), I guess he could have picked out any one of many cars.

Happy New Year!

There hasn't been much news to post regarding the BRB this past month. Most obvious is some of the prep work in moving utilities, namely power poles fore and aft of the bridge. You've also seen the preliminary work in the eventual intersection of a relocated Amity with Eastside Drive. Couple of interesting slip and slide situations as I traversed Wildwood during the sprinkling of storms, although I did not witness any accidents, thank goodness.

The Funk and Ed Ford are a bit preoccupied with each other, and I presume the pressure from those of us affected by the BRB closing has waned. Squeaky wheel deal.

2010 seems to be the target date for completion of the BRB/Barry Road project...less than two years to go...yea!?

Funny thing happened yesterday, as the ice on WL was melting in our cove, it revealed a "dead soldier" floating on the top of the water. Really wanted to retrieve it for a souvenir, but the north wind pushed the remains south...who knows, it might be at the National right now!

Platte County Update

BARRY ROAD, WEST

Potomac to Chariton

12-15-08

Scope of Work:

Platte County is working with the City of Kansas City Missouri to design and construct Barry Road from Potomac to Chariton based on an ultimate three lane road with bike lanes but only build a 28 foot wide portion of the roadway with two 14 foot lanes. This improvement will still provide 2 travel lanes, curbs, storm sewers, sidewalks, streetlights and vertical safety improvements. These improvements should work with the existing budget.

Property Acquisition:

PAR Electric has made contact with approximately half of the property owners to discuss R/W and Easement requirements. One owner at the west end of the project has signed the Temporary Easement affecting their property. PCPW is working on responding to questions that have been raised during meetings between the property owners and PAR Electric. Par Electric is continuing to make initial contact with the other half of the property owners.

All relocations not done prior to the start of the project will begin Summer 2009 in coordination with construction.

Platte County will continue holding coordination meetings with all the utility companies, Kansas City and the design engineer (SKW).

KCP&L is working towards finalizing drawing s for their work and will be requesting a plan review meeting yet this month. MGE and AT&T have completed their relocation design work. Work for these contractors can begin once the Right of Way acquisition is complete.

PCPW, KCMO, and SKW will be meeting again in January 2009 to continue the project coordination process.

Bidding:

Platte County’s goal is to bid the project in 2008, pending successful design, property acquisition and utility relocations.

Construction:

Construction will occur after property acquisition, utility relocation and bidding is complete. Currently anticipate starting Phase I Construction Summer 2009.
