Mayor to Urge Action on Deadly Bridge

Tomorrow morning, August 29, Mayor Funkhouser will urge for the city to take action on an unfinished project at Barry Road and Rush Creek. The Mayor will be joined by Julie Floyd and other representatives of the Community Coalition to Fix Barry Road. The coalition was formed after a deadly accident that occurred on April 10th 2004. They gathered 10,000 signatures from residents urging action to be taken on this unsafe section of Barry Road. To this date, the bridge remains unrepaired.

“I have been told this will take two years to fix. That is unacceptable,” Funkhouser said. “It took about that long to build the Sprint Center. Surely we can do better.”

The Mayor will pledge to work with city staff, the City of Weatherby Lake and residents to make the repairs in a timely manner.

Lynn Hinkle, President of the Community Coalition to Fix Barry Road welcomed the Mayor’s leadership. “There is not a higher priority in the city when it comes to the safety of our citizens than to repair and replace a dangerous bridge under emergency circumstances as quickly as possible,” Hinkle said.

Mayor Funkhouser will also be joined by Mayor Jerry Boss of Weatherby Lake and many other concerned residents.

“We are continuing to expose our residents to unsafe conditions and making life much harder for the residents of Weatherby Lake,” Funkhouser said. “We need to be a better regional neighbor.”

The press conference will be held tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at the Barry Road bridge over Rush Creek: NW Barry Road and N Amity Ave.
